A New mindset for practicing music
Practicing your musical instrument is something we know is important, but as our lives get busier and busier, it can be tough to carve out time to make it happen!
Here are 5 tips to changing our mindset around practice from over 25 years of experience as a professional musician.
Evaluate your goals on the instrument, and align our practice goals to match it. If you are a hobby musician, who just enjoys playing music as a stress-reliever, you will practice less than if you are studying music at the university level.
Balance PLAYING your instrument and PRACTICING your instrument. It’s important to have fun with your instrument, and play the music you like, while also challenging yourself to learn a new chord or a new solo.
Practice in short time periods with specific goals. Instead of trying to practice 30-45 minutes a day, try to achieve one goal, no matter how long it takes. You’ll feel more successful and enjoy the instrument more..
Keep the Instrument in a spot where you can easily see it and play it. Out-of-sight, out-of-mind. Putting your instrument in a place that it’ll only take a couple of seconds to pick it up will greatly increase your likelihood of playing it.
